Overwatch 2 Introduces Major Updates with Perks and Loot Boxes

Blizzard Entertainment is set to launch significant changes in the upcoming Season 15 update for Overwatch 2. The update will introduce a new perks system and bring back loot boxes, along with new heroes and skins.

The perks system allows players to select upgrades during matches. Players will have two opportunities to choose a perk: one minor perk after leveling up, which provides small enhancements like cooldown reductions, and one major perk that can significantly change a hero’s play style. For instance, Torbjorn can opt for either turrets that adhere to surfaces or a more powerful Level 3 turret.

In addition to perks, loot boxes are making a comeback as a reward system. Players can earn loot boxes by completing weekly and event challenges. Those with the Free Battle Pass will receive one Legendary Loot Box, while Premium Battle Pass holders will get two. Blizzard guarantees that every loot box will contain at least a Rare item, with an Epic item expected within five boxes and a Legendary item within twenty.

Later in Season 16, a new game mode called Stadium will be introduced. This mode draws inspiration from popular shooters like Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant. Players will compete in teams of five over seven rounds to earn currency, which can be used to unlock upgrades and customize abilities. The mode will also feature both traditional first-person and a new third-person perspective.

Quality of life improvements are also on the horizon. Players will soon have the ability to ban specific heroes from matches and vote on map selections. Two new heroes are in development: Freja, a bounty hunter with an explosive crossbow, will be available during a free trial weekend in Season 15, while a hero named Aqua, who can control water, is expected to arrive in Season 18.

Season 15 is scheduled to launch on February 18, with additional features like hero bans and map voting to follow later this year.
