Sony Reports Record PS5 Sales, Surpassing 75 Million Units

The PlayStation 5 has achieved a significant milestone, with Sony announcing its best sales quarter to date. In the financial results for the three months ending December 31, 2024, the company reported shipping 9.5 million PS5 consoles, bringing total sales to 75 million units.

This performance puts the PS5 close to matching the PS4’s sales of 76.5 million units at the same point in its lifecycle. The latest figures also include sales of the $750 PS5 Pro model, although its impact on overall sales remains unclear.

Market Trends

Notably, 42% of PS5 purchases came from new users, indicating a growing interest in the console. Additionally, many PS4 owners are transitioning to the PS5. Successful titles such as Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 have contributed to expanding the console’s appeal in family and live-service gaming markets.

Financial Performance

Monthly active users across all platforms rose by 5% year-over-year, totaling 129 million, with half of those users still on PS4. The sales of games and consoles increased by 16%, and the games division experienced a 37% year-over-year rise in operating income, driven by better profit margins on hardware and third-party titles.

Future Outlook

Revenue from PlayStation Plus and Network Services also saw substantial growth, increasing by 20% and 28%, respectively. The adoption of digital software rose to 74%, up from 66% the previous year. In light of these results, Sony has raised its sales revenue forecast by 3% for the current fiscal year, which ends in April 2025.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be a pivotal year for Sony, with anticipated releases including Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and a remaster of Days Gone, alongside various third-party titles revealed in the recent State of Play livestream.
