Capcom has digitally incorporated the likeness of the late actor Toshiro Mifune in its upcoming game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Mifune, a renowned Japanese actor who passed away in 1997, is set to portray the character of Miyamoto Musashi, a fierce samurai.
The game aims to deliver a gritty experience, showcasing intense battles that reflect the samurai’s legendary prowess. This decision aligns with Capcom’s history of utilizing the likeness of actors, both deceased and living, for its characters.
Previously, the Onimusha series featured actors like Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yūsaku Matsuda, who also lent their likenesses to various protagonists. The inclusion of Mifune in this installment comes with the collaboration of Mifune Productions, the company established by the actor in 1962.
This move follows Mifune’s appearance in the Onimusha anime series released on Netflix in late 2023, where his likeness was also digitally recreated. Capcom’s approach continues to spark discussions about the ethical implications of using the images of deceased individuals in modern media.
