Steam Takes Action Against Malware-Infested Game, Warns Users

Valve has removed a game titled PirateFi from its Steam platform due to its distribution of malware. The free-to-play game was launched earlier this month but has since been taken down after reports of malicious activities surfaced.

Players who downloaded PirateFi are receiving notifications from Valve, advising them to conduct full-system scans using anti-virus software. The company also recommends considering a complete reformat of their operating systems to eliminate any lingering threats.

While the exact number of infected players remains uncertain, SteamDB recorded only five active players at its peak. However, discussions on Steam’s forums indicated that many users experienced issues with the game not launching, which may account for the low player count.

In addition, reports suggest that the game’s development may have involved automated processes, as a job posting for an in-game chat moderator appeared on Telegram.

Valve’s actions come amid broader concerns regarding user security on the platform. Recent surveys indicate that nearly half of Steam users are still operating on Windows 10, despite its impending support discontinuation this fall.
