No Other Land, a documentary spotlighting the destruction of a village in the occupied West Bank, has garnered significant acclaim but faces distribution hurdles in the U.S. Despite winning multiple awards, including the best documentary at the Berlin International Film Festival and Gotham Awards, no American studio has stepped forward to distribute the film.
Directed by a team that includes Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, the documentary chronicles the plight of the Masafer Yatta community as Israeli forces demolish homes and displace families. This year, it received an Oscar nomination, yet studios remain hesitant to engage with the politically charged subject matter.
In response to the lack of studio interest, the filmmakers have initiated a self-distribution strategy, successfully placing the film in 23 theaters across the U.S. They plan to expand its reach based on positive box office performance.
The film’s directors, Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, not only direct but also feature prominently in the documentary. Adra, who grew up in Masafer Yatta, has been documenting the community’s struggles since his teenage years, while Abraham frequently visits to cover the situation for an Israeli audience.
