Rust Developer Survey Highlights Growth and Linux Dominance

The latest „State of Rust“ survey reveals significant growth in the usage of the Rust programming language among developers, particularly on Linux platforms. This year, 7,310 developers participated in the survey, showing a marked increase in Rust’s adoption.

Key findings indicate that 38.2% of respondents use Rust for most of their coding, up from 34% in 2023. Additionally, 45.5% of organizations represented in the survey engage in non-trivial use of Rust, a rise from 38.7% last year.

Concerns about Rust’s future persist, with 45.5% of developers worried about insufficient usage in the tech industry. However, a growing majority, 82%, believe that using Rust has helped their companies achieve their goals.

Rust’s appeal lies in its ability to create correct and bug-free software, with 87.1% of respondents citing this as a primary reason for adoption. Performance, security, and developer satisfaction also rank high among the reasons for using Rust.

Linux remains the dominant platform for development, with 73.7% of respondents favoring it. While Visual Studio Code continues to be the leading editor, its usage has decreased from 61.7% to 56.7%. In contrast, the Zed editor has gained popularity, increasing from 0.7% to 8.9%.

Overall, daily usage of Rust has grown to 53%, reflecting a strong confidence in the language’s stability. The survey underscores Rust’s increasing relevance in the software development landscape, particularly in server backends and cloud technologies.
