Ron Howard’s Directing Ambitions Overlooked ‚Happy Days‘

Ron Howard, known for his role as Richie Cunningham on the ABC sitcom Happy Days, never directed an episode of the show despite his early interest in filmmaking. Howard, who began acting at a young age, shifted his focus to directing while still working on the series.

Before joining Happy Days, Howard enrolled in film school at the University of Southern California. His passion for directing was evident as he managed to direct the feature film Grand Theft Auto in 1977 while still acting on the sitcom.

During the 1970s, Howard recognized the distinction between directing television episodes and feature films. He was eager to pursue projects with greater artistic aspirations, feeling that directing a sitcom episode wouldn’t provide the experience he sought.

Howard respected the established workflow of Happy Days, acknowledging that director Jerry Paris was skilled in meeting the show’s demands. This choice allowed Howard to develop his directing style without disrupting the show’s success.

Ultimately, Howard’s decision not to direct any episodes of Happy Days allowed him to fully commit to his filmmaking career, which later culminated in winning the Best Director Oscar for A Beautiful Mind in 2002.
