AMTSO, the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization, has published its first-ever VPN Performance Testing Guidelines, marking a significant advancement in VPN assessment practices. Released on February 19, 2025, these guidelines aim to enhance the fairness and accuracy of privacy and security evaluations for VPN services.
The guidelines were developed by AMTSO’s VPN working group, which comprises both VPN vendors and testing experts. This initiative is the first in a series intended to establish standardized benchmarks for evaluating VPN performance.
Key components of the guidelines include:
- Testing for automatic activation on system startup and connection stability.
- Kill switch assessments to prevent data leaks during connection drops.
- Evaluation of DNS, IP, and WebRTC leak prevention.
- Performance checks under varying network conditions.
- Verification of access to websites while using the VPN.
As VPN applications grow in importance for online privacy, the need for standardized testing becomes increasingly critical. AMTSO encourages independent testers and VPN providers to adopt these guidelines to ensure reliable assessments.
In addition to the current focus on VPN performance, AMTSO plans to expand its efforts to include malware testing within VPN environments and further evaluations of security features.
