Team Fortress 2 Classic, a popular fan mod, is officially coming to Steam later this year. Initially released in 2020, this mod reimagines the early post-launch era of the original Team Fortress 2.
The mod introduces a new class called the Civilian, inspired by Team Fortress Classic. Additionally, players can expect original weapons such as a redesigned nailgun, dynamite pack, and tranquilizer gun.
Notably, the game will support four teams instead of the traditional two, with new color schemes for the additional teams. Modes like Arena and King of the Hill will now feature these new dynamics.
Visually, the mod restores the toon-style character shading from the game’s beta and enhances textures and models. It also reimplements cut content and adds new game modes. Players can expect new weapons and items, including jump pads and flak cannons, which significantly alter gameplay.
Extensive modding support will allow players to customize their experience, enabling server hosts to utilize advanced weapon packs and maps. The development team has been actively working on updates, balance changes, and bug fixes since the mod’s inception in 2014.
To play Team Fortress 2 Classic, users will need to own Team Fortress 2, which is available for free. This announcement follows Valve’s recent release of TF2’s source code, hinting at further modding possibilities in the future.
