EA has released the source code for four classic titles from its Command & Conquer franchise, now available to the public under the GPL license. The titles include the original Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and Command & Conquer: Generals.
This move enhances video game preservation and provides developers with access to original code, which can inspire new projects. While fan efforts like OpenRA and OpenSAGE have created alternatives, the official release of the source code is a significant step forward.
EA’s initiative was supported by key figures including technical director Brian Barnes and producer Jim Vessella, alongside community member Luke Feenan. The restoration of these titles‘ source code reflects a collaborative effort to maintain the legacy of the franchise.
In addition to the open-source code, EA plans to introduce Steam Workshop support for its more recent Command & Conquer games. This will include a modding support pack containing essential files for titles utilizing the SAGE engine, such as:
- Command & Conquer: Renegade
- Command & Conquer: Generals & Zero Hour
- Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 & Uprising
- Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight
These tools will allow users to create new maps and assets, as well as implement features like higher refresh rates and ultrawide resolutions, which were previously challenging to add.
To accompany this announcement, EA has also released a 35-minute video showcasing alpha gameplay and archival footage from Command & Conquer: Generals and Renegade.
