Russo Brothers Consider Video Games for Upcoming Avengers Films

The Russo brothers, known for directing Avengers: Endgame, are open to the idea of developing video games based on their upcoming films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This interest comes as they prepare for the release of their new film, The Electric State, on Netflix on March 14, which will be accompanied by a prequel video game.

Currently, the directors are focused on other projects, but they have expressed a willingness to explore gaming opportunities. Their media company, AGBO, has recently partnered with Donald Mustard, the creator of Fortnite, which could enhance their storytelling capabilities across different media.

Historically, the Avengers franchise has seen mixed success in video games. The last major title, Marvel’s Avengers, released in September 2020, failed to meet expectations due to limited content and a reliance on microtransactions. Support for the game ended in late 2023, leading to its discontinuation.

In contrast, other Marvel games have performed well. Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles received critical acclaim, while Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy was well-reviewed despite lackluster sales. Additionally, the free-to-play game Marvel Rivals launched successfully in late 2024.

On the other hand, DC Comics has faced challenges in the gaming arena, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League underperforming and the cancellation of a Wonder Woman game. Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a new strategy for its gaming division, including a potential new Batman Arkham game.
