Tapbots Announces Upcoming Phoenix App for Bluesky Users

Tapbots is set to launch a new app named Phoenix, specifically designed for the Bluesky social network. This announcement comes as the company aims to expand its offerings beyond its current Mastodon client, Ivory.

Bluesky, which has over 32 million users, operates on the AT Protocol, distinct from the ActivityPub protocol used by Mastodon and other federated apps. Tapbots, known for its successful iOS applications, revealed the upcoming app in a post on Bluesky, indicating it will debut later this summer.

While developing Phoenix, Tapbots will temporarily slow down its work on Ivory. This decision reflects the company’s strategy to support both social networks, acknowledging that relying solely on Mastodon for revenue is not viable.

The new app aims to enhance user experience by providing a dedicated platform for Bluesky, rather than merging functionalities with Ivory. A cross-posting feature will allow users to maintain a presence on both networks.

Although specific details about Phoenix’s monetization strategy are not yet available, it is expected to adopt a subscription model similar to Ivory, which currently charges $1.99 per month or $14.99 annually. The app will enter a limited public alpha phase ahead of its full launch.
