Hector Martin has stepped down as the lead developer of Asahi Linux, a Linux distribution tailored for Apple M-series Macs. His resignation, effective immediately, stems from burnout and ongoing conflicts within the Linux community.
Martin noted that the once-exciting project had become overwhelming due to intense community demands and complaints. Over the years, he received numerous requests related to battery performance, USB-C display compatibility, and support for next-generation M-series chips.
Building Asahi Linux posed significant challenges, particularly as it was developed without vendor support or documentation. Martin indicated that despite the team’s efforts, community expectations remained high.
In his resignation letter, he expressed a longing for a time when he could enjoy personal downtime without the constant pressure of unmet project goals. He also mentioned that communication with Linux creator Linus Torvalds regarding the project’s challenges had not materialized, further contributing to his decision.
Martin has encouraged those who supported him financially to redirect their contributions to the Asahi Linux OpenCollective. He has also indicated that he is open to new opportunities.
