Avowed, the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, has undergone significant changes during its development process. Initially pitched as a multiplayer experience akin to Destiny combined with Skyrim, the game has shifted its focus to a more narrative-driven approach.
Development began in 2018, but the project faced two major reboots. The first reboot led to the removal of its multiplayer elements, while the second, which took place in January 2021, involved a change in leadership just before entering production.
Director Carrie Patel explained that the team decided to concentrate on the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity universe. Additionally, they replaced the original open world concept with open-zone environments. This change allows for more distinct and thematically rich spaces, enhancing the player’s experience as they transition between different areas.
Despite scaling back on creating expansive maps, the team remains optimistic about the game’s sales performance. Currently, Avowed is available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, as well as through Game Pass.
Obsidian is also working on The Outer Worlds 2, which was announced in 2021 and is set to release this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The first gameplay trailer for this sequel was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024.
