The BBC Radiophonic Workshop has made its extensive archive available for public sampling, marking a significant milestone for audio enthusiasts. Founded in the 1950s, this innovative studio was responsible for creating original music and sound effects for various BBC productions.
Notable works from the workshop include audio for classics like Doctor Who, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Goon Show, and Blake’s 7. The pioneering efforts of its musicians and composers were instrumental in laying the groundwork for electronic music and sampling.
In collaboration with Spitfire Audio and BBC Studios, the workshop’s library now offers a diverse range of sounds. The collection features:
- Original tapes from the studio
- New recordings
- Content from members and associates
Users can explore various categories, including found sounds, junk percussion, and synthesizers. An introductory price of $159 (£119/€143) is available until March 6, after which the price will increase to $199 (£149/€179).
