Automattic-owned Beeper has unveiled redesigned desktop and iOS applications, marking a significant update after its acquisition of the multi-service messaging platform last year for $125 million. The new apps are currently in beta and aim to enhance user experience.
The desktop application is built on the foundation of Texts.com, another messaging service acquired by Automattic, while the iOS app has been developed from scratch. Both applications promise improved performance with faster operations and reduced battery consumption.
Currently, Beeper utilizes Beeper Cloud to manage messages and credentials for various services. Future updates will transition this data storage to on-device solutions, enhancing privacy and security. Additionally, the new apps will feature on-device encryption and support for multiple accounts within the same messaging service.
Looking ahead, the Mac version of the app is set to include functionality for sending and receiving iMessages, expanding its capabilities further. Beeper was founded by Eric Migicovsky, known for creating the Pebble smartwatch. Following the acquisition, he has taken on the role of head of messaging at Beeper, although he has recently indicated a renewed focus on the Pebble brand.
