The latest film from director Bong Joon-ho, titled Mickey 17, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. This sci-fi drama, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, stars Robert Pattinson as a bio-clone worker caught in a cycle of death and rebirth.
Set in a future where space exploration is prioritized, the film critiques the mindset of technology enthusiasts who disregard environmental concerns. Pattinson’s character, Mickey Barnes, takes on dangerous jobs for a space exploration corporation, accepting his fate as an ‚expendable‘ worker.
With a runtime of two hours and 17 minutes, Mickey 17 presents visually striking moments interspersed with comedic elements. The narrative follows Mickey as he navigates his multiple lives, facing threats from alien creatures and his own clones.
Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette portray antagonistic characters, adding a layer of satire to the film. As Mickey grapples with his identity, the film raises philosophical questions about life, death, and consciousness.
Despite its lighter tone, the film includes moments of grotesque imagery reminiscent of classic sci-fi horror. Mickey 17 is set to release in the UK on April 18, 2025.
