Brazilian Police Use Costumes to Combat Carnival Theft

Brazilian police took an unconventional approach during the Sao Paulo Carnival by dressing as popular video game characters Mario and Luigi to arrest pickpockets. This creative tactic aimed to deter theft during the festivities, which ran from February 28 to March 4.

Officers dressed as the iconic characters, along with another officer dressed as Yoshi, were seen apprehending a suspect in a video shared on social media by Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas. The video featured music from the Super Mario franchise, adding a playful element to the serious operation.

In addition to this costume strategy, Brazilian police previously donned Power Rangers outfits to tackle similar issues related to theft at the event. This method reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement to enhance security and protect attendees from pickpockets.

Last year, police implemented a similar undercover strategy, focusing on preventing criminals from stealing phones and money during the carnival celebrations. The use of costumes aims to blend in with the festive atmosphere while effectively addressing crime.
