Conclave Takes Top Honors at 2025 BAFTAs

Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, emerged as the big winner at the 2025 BAFTA Awards, claiming four awards including Best Picture. The film, which explores the complexities of a Vatican election, led the nominations with twelve. It also won Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, and Editing.

Brady Corbet’s film, The Brutalist, a drama centered on a Hungarian architect in post-war America, secured four awards as well, including Best Director and Leading Actor for Adrien Brody. Brody’s performance was highlighted among a competitive field.

In a surprising turn, Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role in Anora, defeating favorites such as Demi Moore and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Madison’s character, an exotic dancer, resonates with themes of respect for the sex worker community.

Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, won two awards despite controversy surrounding its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, who faced backlash over past social media posts. The film is nominated for a record-breaking 13 Oscars.

The ceremony also recognized Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl for Best Animation and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story for Best Documentary.

Hosted by David Tennant, the BAFTAs serve as a significant precursor to the upcoming Academy Awards, showcasing a diverse array of films and talent. This year’s event highlighted the ongoing shifts in the industry, particularly in response to previous criticisms regarding representation.
