Despelote, a slice-of-life soccer game, is set to launch on May 1. This indie title, published by Panic, will be available on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Developed by Julián Cordero and Sebastián Valbuena, the game immerses players in the life of 8-year-old Julián, exploring the city of Quito in 2001. The narrative unfolds during Ecuador’s economic recovery, just before the 2002 World Cup.
The game features actual photographs of Quito, stylized with high-contrast grit, while characters and the soccer ball are depicted as stark line drawings. In addition, the audio was recorded on location, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
Originally announced in 2023 with a planned release in 2024, Despelote has now confirmed its May 1 launch date. It has already garnered attention, receiving four nominations at the 2025 Independent Games Festival. A demo is available on Steam for those interested in previewing the game.
