Details Emerge on Canceled Twisted Metal Live-Service Game

Sony’s Twisted Metal franchise faced a significant shift with plans for a live-service game that ultimately was canceled. This decision came amid changing strategies within the company regarding live-service titles.

The original Twisted Metal, released in 1995, was a defining game for the PlayStation 1. Despite its long absence from consoles since the 2012 reboot, the potential for a revival existed with this unannounced project.

UI Programmer Hugo Silva recently shared blurred screenshots from the canceled game on his website, indicating that it was still in the early stages of development. The images hinted at a focus on vehicular combat, but also suggested an innovative shift towards third-person shooter gameplay, indicating that combat would extend beyond vehicles.

Development occurred at Firesprite, a studio within Sony’s PlayStation Studios. The cancellation followed a reevaluation of Sony’s commitment to live-service games, particularly after the underwhelming launch of another title, Concord.

Interest in the Twisted Metal franchise has seen a resurgence, partly due to the live-action series on Peacock. The upcoming second season promises to bring back familiar characters and actors, including Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.

As of now, Sony has not announced any future plans for the Twisted Metal series, leaving fans wondering about its fate.
