Federal Government to Close EV Charging Stations and Sell Fleet Vehicles

The General Services Administration (GSA) plans to shut down federal electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the coming weeks. This decision will also involve offloading EVs purchased by the previous administration.

The shutdown will impact personal electric vehicles owned by government employees as well as government-owned EVs. The GSA oversees government buildings and has stated that all GSA-owned charging stations are not considered mission critical.

In recent years, the number of federally-owned EVs increased after President Biden mandated the electrification of government fleets in 2021. Funding for EV chargers was also included in the Inflation Reduction Act signed in 2024.

The GSA’s plan will coincide with the removal of EVs purchased under the Biden administration, which may involve selling or storing these vehicles. This move aligns with the previous administration’s stance on EVs and the transportation goals outlined in Project 2025, a plan developed by The Heritage Foundation that has influenced recent policy decisions.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has reversed the Biden administration’s order to electrify government vehicles and halted a project to install high-speed EV chargers along highways. The potential elimination of federal EV tax credits is also a consideration that could impact EV adoption.

Although transitioning to EVs is seen as a step toward reducing carbon emissions, the shift from manufacturing gas vehicles has not been inexpensive for automakers. Tariffs and the removal of incentives have led to lobbying efforts aimed at urging the Trump administration to reconsider its current policies.
