Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has launched a free demo for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii today. The demo is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam. Players can download it starting at 7 AM Pacific Time, 10 AM Eastern Time, or 3 PM UK time.
The full game is set to release on February 21, 2025, and will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, these platforms will not offer the demo. While the studio hasn’t confirmed if progress from the demo will carry over to the full game, it seems unlikely due to the demo’s structure.
In the demo, players can explore parts of Honolulu and Madlantis, which are not accessible at the beginning of the full game. Players can switch between the Mad Dog and Sea Dog fighting styles, engage in battles against powerful bounty enemies, and participate in ship and deck battles within the Pirates‘ Coliseum. The demo also includes customization options and a karaoke feature with three song selections.
This title is a spin-off sequel to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the eighth mainline entry in the Yakuza series. The narrative follows Goro Majima, who awakens with amnesia and embarks on a pirate adventure in Hawaii. A trailer from the October Xbox Partner Showcase showcased ship combat reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and hinted at the return of character Taiga Saejima, suggesting deeper connections to the main series.
Additionally, the game’s story is expected to take around 15 to 18 hours to complete, making it longer than the previous spin-off, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Players who sign up for email notifications or a Sega reward system can dress Majima as Kiryu Kazuma, a longtime series protagonist.
