NetEase Games has laid off its North America team responsible for the popular game Marvel Rivals, despite the title’s significant success. The Seattle-based studio experienced these layoffs as the game continues to attract hundreds of thousands of players on platforms like Steam.
Marvel Rivals ranks among the top five games with the most active users on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Steam, according to Circana data. The game regularly maintains around 200,000 concurrent players.
The layoffs affected key team members, including level designers who contributed to the development of new gameplay and level design mechanics. As the game prepares to enter the second half of its first season, it will introduce two new heroes: the Thing and Human Torch.
NetEase has yet to provide a comment regarding the layoffs. The situation highlights the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry, where even successful titles can lead to workforce reductions.
