Lenovo introduced its Yoga Solar PC Concept at MWC 2025, marking a significant step in integrating solar technology into laptops. This device weighs 2.6 pounds and is less than 0.6 inches thick, comparable to standard 14-inch clamshell laptops.
Equipped with an OLED display, up to 32GB of RAM, and a 50.2 WHr battery, the Yoga Solar PC also features a 2MP IR webcam for Windows Hello. However, the standout feature is the embedded solar panels in its lid.
Utilizing Back Contact Cell technology, these panels achieve up to 24 percent solar energy conversion, matching many high-end home solar systems. The device supports Dynamic Solar Tracking, allowing it to adjust settings for optimal energy collection.
Lenovo claims that the Yoga Solar PC can generate enough power to play an hour of videos after just 20 minutes in sunlight. Even indoors, it can harness energy from as little as 0.3 watts of light to recharge its battery.
To enhance user experience, Lenovo developed a bespoke app to monitor the solar energy absorbed by the panels. Despite its promising features, Lenovo has no immediate plans to commercialize this concept.
The Yoga Solar PC Concept demonstrates a polished design and sturdy build, standing out among prototypes. Its photovoltaic cells are protected by a transparent layer, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal.
While the concept shows potential, the practicality of integrating solar panels into laptops raises questions. Many users may find standalone solar arrays more effective for charging devices. Nonetheless, the Yoga Solar PC Concept represents an exciting development in laptop technology.
