Meta Ventures into Humanoid Robotics for Household Tasks

Meta is developing humanoid robots designed to assist with household chores, according to a report from Bloomberg. This initiative will utilize the company’s advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR).

The project will be housed within Meta’s Reality Labs hardware division, which is responsible for the Quest VR headsets and the Orion AR glasses. The long-term vision for these robots is to create a software platform similar to Android, enabling other manufacturers to integrate Meta’s technology into their hardware.

Initially, the focus will be on tasks such as folding laundry, carrying glasses of water, and loading dishwashers. This approach aims to generate interest in a product category that may raise concerns among consumers.

Meta has reportedly engaged in discussions with robotics companies, including Unitree, known for its quadruped robot, and Figure AI, a humanoid robot maker backed by notable investors like OpenAI and Nvidia.

While current humanoid robots lack the capability to perform household tasks effectively, Meta believes that its investments in AI and XR technologies will pave the way for future advancements. The company anticipates that it will take a few years before functional humanoid robots are commercially available.

Meta’s move into robotics aligns with similar efforts from tech giants like Apple and Google, both of which have been exploring robotics development.
