Microsoft Finalizes EU Data Sovereignty Initiative for Cloud Services

Microsoft has completed its EU Data Boundary project, enabling customers in Europe to store and process their data within the EU. This initiative addresses previous privacy concerns regarding data being sent to the US.

The project allows Microsoft Cloud customers to manage professional services data, including technical support interactions, entirely within the EU and EFTA regions. This marks a significant step in Microsoft’s commitment to data sovereignty and user privacy.

Launched in January 2023, the project underwent multiple phases. The first phase focused on core services, while subsequent phases expanded the scope to include pseudonymized personal data. The final phase enhances customer control, transparency, and accountability, aligning with European Cloud principles.

Microsoft has invested over $20 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure to meet the growing demand for local options. This project follows heightened scrutiny from EU regulators regarding data processing practices by major tech companies.
