OpenAI Delays ChatGPT-4.5 Launch and Introduces New Payment Model

OpenAI has announced a delay in the rollout of ChatGPT-4.5, originally scheduled for release tomorrow. Instead of a full launch, the new version will be made available to a select group of users over several days.

ChatGPT-4.5, touted as the most advanced version of the popular chatbot, was launched last week for Pro subscribers. Plus subscribers will receive access this week, albeit in a staggered manner to manage server load.

Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman proposed a new credit-based payment system for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This model would replace the existing flat fee of $20, offering a set number of tokens each month. Subscribers could then use these tokens across various OpenAI products, including Deep Research and ChatGPT-4.5.

The staggered rollout aims to prevent server overload, allowing users to engage in longer conversations without hitting performance limits. Altman indicated that a full release could lead to low rate limits, restricting usage for many.

While some users on X responded positively to the new payment structure, the general sentiment was mixed, with many expressing concerns about the potential for micromanaging AI usage. Altman’s approach to gather user feedback via social media is seen as a departure from typical corporate communications.
