Rivian plans to launch a hands-off version of its driver assistance system for highway driving within weeks. This new feature aims to enhance Rivian’s competitiveness against established players like Ford and General Motors, both of which have already introduced similar systems.
The hands-off system will allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel while on highways. Rivian also intends to unveil an ‚eyes-off‘ version in 2026, which will enable drivers to divert their attention from the road entirely.
Despite facing challenges in the current market, Rivian reported its first positive gross profit in the fourth quarter of 2024, largely due to a company-wide cost-cutting initiative and increased revenue from software and services.
Rivian’s journey toward autonomy began in 2018, but the company has since focused on launching and scaling its vehicle lineup. With around 50,000 vehicles built and delivered in recent years, Rivian is now positioned to roll out advanced features like the hands-off system, aided by a recent partnership with Volkswagen.
The company employs an ‚end-to-end‘ training method for its driver assistance platform, utilizing data from its cameras and radar sensors. Initially, the hands-off feature will be restricted to highway use, with plans to expand its capabilities to other road types over time.
