Samsung has introduced its 9100 PRO Series solid-state drives (SSDs), featuring the company’s first consumer-grade 8TB NVMe model. These new SSDs utilize the PCIe 5.0 standard, offering high-speed performance that may exceed the needs of typical users.
Product Overview
The 9100 PRO series provides up to double the storage capacity of the previous 990 PRO line. It will be available in several configurations, including 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models, with the 8TB variant set to launch later this year.
Performance Specifications
Key specifications for the 9100 PRO SSDs include:
- Sequential read speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s
- Sequential write speeds of up to 13,400 MB/s
- Random read speeds reaching 2,200K IOPS
- Random write speeds of up to 2,600K IOPS
These drives are also reported to be 49 percent more power-efficient than the 990 PRO series and have a slim profile of approximately 0.35 inches (around 8.9mm).
Market Positioning
Despite the impressive specifications, the practical applications for such high speeds are limited. Most consumers, including gamers, may find PCIe 4.0 drives sufficient for their needs, often at half the cost of the new models.
Pricing and Availability
The initial 9100 PRO SSDs will be available starting in March, with the following price points:
- 1TB model: $200
- 2TB model: $300
- 4TB model: $550
Models with a heatsink will incur an additional cost of $20. Pricing for the upcoming 8TB model has yet to be announced, but it is expected to be released in the second half of the year.
