The Thing Joins Marvel Rivals as a New Playable Character

NetEase has unveiled gameplay for The Thing, a new character in the hero shooter Marvel Rivals. This addition comes alongside Human Torch as part of the mid-season update scheduled for February 21, 2025.

The Thing will be available as a free-to-play character, consistent with the game’s model for all current and future heroes. The latest trailer highlights his role as a tank, emphasizing his combat abilities focused on close-range attacks.

His primary attack consists of a series of punches, complemented by a powerful punch that extends his range. Additionally, The Thing can sprint, which allows him to knock enemies into the air, culminating in a strong ground pound that deals significant damage.

In terms of support capabilities, The Thing features an ability that allows him to leap to a nearby teammate, gaining bonus health from destructible rocks that orbit him. This mechanic pairs well with his team-up move with Wolverine, where he can throw Wolverine as part of a special attack.

The Thing’s ultimate ability unleashes a large ground pound, damaging and launching enemies within a cone, making them susceptible to follow-up attacks. As the first Vanguard character introduced since the game’s launch, The Thing is set to become a favored choice among players.

The upcoming mid-season update will also include adjustments to support characters, addressing balance concerns. Despite the game’s success, NetEase has reportedly laid off several developers working on Marvel Rivals.
