Volvo Launches ES90 EV Featuring Advanced 800-Volt Charging Technology

Volvo has introduced its new ES90 electric vehicle, marking a significant advancement in its EV lineup. This fully electrified model, based on the S60 sedan, combines the adaptability of a fastback with the spaciousness and higher ground clearance typical of SUVs.

The ES90 is the first Volvo to utilize an 800-volt charging system, which enhances charging speeds and overall performance. The vehicle’s design incorporates lighter components that contribute to improved range and acceleration.

Volvo claims the ES90 offers a driving range of up to 700 kilometers (approximately 435 miles), although official EPA estimates may vary. When connected to a 350 kW fast charger, the vehicle can gain 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, its 106 kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in only 20 minutes.

All variants of the ES90 reach a top speed of 112 mph. The Twin Motor Performance version, equipped with all-wheel drive, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

The ES90 employs the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, which serves as the foundation for all of the company’s electric vehicles. This system facilitates simultaneous over-the-air updates across the entire EV range. Notably, the ES90 is powered by a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, enhancing its computing capabilities.

Design features include a slightly elevated ride height, Thor’s Hammer headlights, and C-shaped LED rear lamps. The vehicle is equipped with a comprehensive suite of sensors, including one lidar, five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, enhancing its active safety systems.

Inside, the ES90 offers flexible seating with individually foldable rear seats and a panoramic roof that provides 99.9 percent UV protection. An optional electrochromic roof allows users to adjust the glass tint for glare reduction. The infotainment system is accessible via a 14.5-inch center display, featuring built-in Google apps such as Maps and Assistant.

Currently, interested buyers can place orders for the ES90 in several European countries including Austria, Belgium, and Germany, with plans to expand to additional markets throughout 2026.
